Discussion The GN review of the Pentium G7400, is a perfect example of what's wrong with big reviewers.

You shouldn't be buying a Celeron or pentium in 2022. Landfill tech. Doesn't matter if its an office or gaming box. No such thing as a budget gamer now anyway.

Question Will the $115 I3 12100 processor reset the 'budget' PC scene?

if you wanted a mom box you’d give her an iPad or chromebook. I haven’t built a PC for years but if someone still wanted one I’d expect a $100 or less mobo to go with this sort of CPU. And isn’t H610 gimped with single channel (or is it single DIMM) RAM only?

    Info Alder Lake Pentiums/Celerons

Landfill rubbish. Dual cores have no place in 2022. If you want a 4K pornhub premium box buy an IPad or one of the less rubbish chromebooks. 2 cores simply don’t have enough puff no more. Even my ultra tightarse work upgraded to Coffee Lake hexa cores even if they are T versions. Better yet:

Discussion First contact with Ryzen 5600G... Wow!

Said everyone at work too when we went from Core 2 PCs to low power "T" Coffee Lakes this year - literally a 10yr jump from 2 cores to 6 cores with 4 times the RAM and Win 10. Even the manager was surprised that Windows doesn't suck when you actually give it resources. Straight currency...

Discussion My 3400G rig, one year later

I somehow can't see how a Core 2 or X2 is even remotely unusable for that long even with OPs basic usage. Those CPUs/platforms are garbage landfill by now. And no SSD *shudders*.

Work is using Athlon X2 systems, what ancient tech are you running?

How are these still working? What sort of voodoo magic is this? Most importantly, why why why? So picked up some work in a retail joint with a number of branches for some extra cash. Great! Except the till hardware is 15 years old and still running XP. The master server in the office is using a...

    Apple A13: Launch 2019-09-10 - Geekbench 4 & 5 scores available (GB4 multi-core 14070)

Bought an XR 6 months ago and consequently went all in with Apple tech; having everything in-house is certainly a big benefit. 20% faster than stupid fast is still certainly something though.

Apple really has run out of ideas, hasn't it?

Show me a Windows laptop that can match my 15" MacBook Pro in terms of ecosystem (Apple Watch + iPhone), build quality and support through AppleCare+. They don't exist. They are overpriced, sure, but you can't get that whole package anywhere else. Not saying its perfect, but its as close to...

News [Wired] PS5 confirmed to use 7nm Zen 2, Navi, SSD

I wouldn't say the Jaguar is completely hopeless but there will always be limits no matter what SoC you stuff in. Besides, look at AC Odyssey - gigantic world but its nearly all copy paste - in 100 hours half of that is the doing the exact same thing in a different part of a slightly re-skinned...

Shiny new MacBook, i7 8850H, where is the Coffee Lake love?

Only the i9 is above the chip in Intel's product stack, and its fascinating how thin you can get whilst still slapping in a CPU of this calibre. Of course there will be some throttling eventually. VirtualLarry, couldn't be woken up from sleep. Fiddled with the CMOS battery then put my foot...

News [Wired] PS5 confirmed to use 7nm Zen 2, Navi, SSD

I have switched to consoles exclusively for gaming, couldn't care less about extra tessellated titties. Had Ti's and Titans; got over them. Shiny new MacBook, i7 8850H, where is the Coffee Lake love?

After the unfortunate death of my desktop and seeing as my inclination for building has now disappeared, picked up a top shelf model. Not too many reviews on the actual chip out there, any one running one? Blows my 7600 non K out of the water.

Discussion A possible point in future where Intel will no longer make Core i3.

OP doesn't understand economics. Intel, like any company that makes $$$$$$$$$$$$$, has a product stack from top to bottom. Even the Iphone has a "cheap" (well cheaper) model now - the XR. If you don't want or can't afford an i5 you drop lower otherwise you'd piss off to AMD. The i3 is a brand...

    Idle 100 c for 2700x ?

You are using a $300 CPU on a $60 mobo (with 2 RAM slots!) with what appears to be a sub $100 PSU? That is the equivalent of getting a $300 suit and matching it to some $20 shoes from Kmart . . . . . . build needs to be rebuilt before something sparks up and gives.

    FM2 / FM2+ (A55M / A4-6300 dual-core/single-module VLIW APU) - not as bad as I remember.

I wonder how long this 7600 non K I built back in March 2017 will last. I rarely game anymore, and if so, on a PS4 that is fast gathering dust. I suppose, how long till Youporn overwhelms this i5? :D

    FM2 / FM2+ (A55M / A4-6300 dual-core/single-module VLIW APU) - not as bad as I remember.

The Passmark score is roughly equivalent to a modern G3930 which would have better codec and Win 10 support. The speed difference would be due to the RAM. I wouldn't use 10 on such old hardware.

Whom is still rocking an Athlon / Phenom II (even X6), or a Core2Duo/Quad? X58 users too.

I've used G1820s and 4770s and there is a distinct difference in terms of pep. It is very noticeable. Plus that Phenom would be a power pig to boot. I've seen this 7600 non K push past 50% with Filezilla and a couple of tabs in Chrome. Software has gotten fatter and fatter and if I had a choice...

Whom is still rocking an Athlon / Phenom II (even X6), or a Core2Duo/Quad? X58 users too.

Pointless. An i3 8100 would dump half the heat, use half the power, and be at least twice if not three times faster. You can tell when the snap is missing off old boxes. Everything has gotten fatter - code, the Internet, you.

    Question Got Titan RTX?

I remember spending thousands on fat systems with multiple TB SSDs and all the rest. Then I got over it and bought a PS4 and realized I'd take Persona 5 or any other exclusive a dozen times over fancy graphics that most games don't even properly take advantage of.

Intel's fancy new mandatory Win 10 UWD drivers, everything else is legacy

Driver is fine but the modern app thingy doesn't work. Refuses to open and there are also frequent BEX64 errors for the Intel module. Seems like the 1809 update is required. Still Xvideos works just fine so meh.

Version 25.20.100.6444, built only for Windows 10 64 bit: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28148 Nothing really new apart from being built with a difference compiler and some auto-tuning bits. But its modern! EDIT: These now shift the control centre to an app from the Windows Store...

Whether to upgrade 6yr old sys. GA-970A-D3 (rev. 3.0)

From CPUbenchmark (which isn't exactly that accurate sure but as an indicator) - 8350 - Just under 9000 marks - Phenom 965 - Just over 4000 marks - Athlon 200GE - Just under 5000 marks - i3 8100 - Just over 8000 marks I'd be more worried about that mobo. You could spend $79 and then if it dies...

Best web-browsing desktop box out of these three, for friend's mom?

2 is a dog, 3 doesn't have enough space, 1 would be the best option. I have no idea why manufacturers insist on those tiny 128GB SSDs for a number of prebuilts either, including laptops. You need at least 240GB, preferably 512GB. Windows and Office are fat bastards and with all the other crap...

Consensus on suitability of i3-8100 for non-gaming builds? Entry-level gaming?

Still using a 7600 non K since early 2017. If I was building now I'd pick an 8100. No BIOS updates, stable platform, no need for faster RAM, HEVC + H.264 + VP9 decoding all works out of the box (and interestingly you can now use Task Manager in Win 10 to see video decode load). Shame about the...

Philosophy of upgrade cycles... cutting-edge, mid-range, or trailing-edge?

A tablet will never match a desktop/laptop even for basic usage. It is simply much easier to work a keyboard and mouse than pecking at a touchscreen. I'd say an i3 8100. An ASRock H310M-HDV would be on of the cheapest mobos for it that are OK.

G3258... anyone still running one? Overclocked?

$400 isn't too much money for a box that is in use daily. I spent $200 on PS Vita fat OLED with a 16GB card just to play Persona 4 Golden. That isn't a necessity. I wouldn't drop down to a dual core for anything anymore. Phones have moved on, $50 Android boxes have moved on, everyone has moved...

Athlon 200GE - the ultimate great place-holder CPU?

Big leap there. Some will always use just works and some will always tinker and seek out alternatives. If I was to build another office box for myself right now it would have an i3 at the least. I don't need to think about BIOS updates, twitchy RAM, QVL lists or any odd glitches. Sure Intel has...

Athlon 200GE - the ultimate great place-holder CPU?

Which is why I still recommend Intel for basic boxes. The platform is mature and stable. You don't need to think if a Pentium or i3 will work or be wonky in a B360 mobo.
  36. E

Athlon 200GE - the ultimate great place-holder CPU?

Don't see the point. Buy a 2200G or i3 8100 instead. A 200GE is a false economy. Saving a bit more gets you a substantially better platform.

How many cores and threads do you think are too many for a mainstream desktop?

Define mainstream. I made an earlier thread: http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=threads/what-would-be-a-default-cpu-choice-for-a-basic-box-in-2k18.2554059/ If you exclude gaming an i3 8100 is sufficient for an all rounder but if you want 4K and encoding I'd up it to an 8400.
  38. E

What would be a "default" CPU choice for a basic box in 2K18?

Had me wondering. I've scrapped all but one of my PCs and moved to a PS4 but I am wondering. I built my current desktop early last year with an i5 7600 non K. For general usage minus gaming but everything else (think the box that sits there until it dies doing it all except for gaming) what...
