This refinement process includes configuring the properties of the cube, measure groups, and dimensions. For example, an architect must define the aggregation design, which tells SSAS which aggregations to pre-calculate and store on disk to improve query performance. Designing an effective aggregation strategy requires a deep understanding of the expected query patterns. The 70-467 Exam would test this ability to design and configure a cube for optimal performance and usability.

Designing Dimensions, Attributes, and Hierarchies

In a Multidimensional model, the dimensions are the heart of the user experience. A significant part of the design effort, and a key area of study for the 70-467 Exam, is in crafting well-designed cube dimensions. Each dimension in the cube is based on one or more tables from the DSV. The architect must define the key attribute that uniquely identifies each member of the dimension, such as "Product Key." The next step is to define the other attributes that describe the dimension members. For a "Product" dimension, this would include attributes like "Product Name," "Color," "Size," and "Brand." For each attribute, the architect must configure its properties, such as its name, data type, and how it is related to the key attribute. These attributes are what the user will see in their reporting tools, so they must be named in a business-friendly way. Most importantly, the architect must design the attribute relationships and user hierarchies. Attribute relationships define the one-to-many links between attributes (e.g., one Category contains many Subcategories). Defining these relationships allows the query engine to work more efficiently. User hierarchies, such as a "Product Category" hierarchy that rolls from Category to Subcategory to Product Name, provide a natural drill-down path for users to explore the data. Designing these hierarchies correctly is fundamental to creating an intuitive user experience.

Designing Measures and Measure Groups

While dimensions provide the context, measures provide the quantitative data for analysis. The design of measures and measure groups was another critical topic for the 70-467 Exam. A measure group in a cube is a collection of measures that all share the same granularity and are typically based on a single fact table. For example, a cube might have a "Sales" measure group based on the sales fact table and an "Inventory" measure group based on the inventory snapshot fact table. Within each measure group, the architect defines the individual measures. Each measure is based on a numeric column in the fact table, such as "SalesAmount." The architect must define the aggregation function for each measure, which is most commonly "Sum" but can also be "Count," "Min," "Max," or "Distinct Count." They must also configure the display format for the measure, such as formatting it as a currency with two decimal places. Beyond simple measures based on a single column, an architect must also design calculated measures. These are measures that are defined using an MDX expression rather than being directly tied to a column in the fact table. For example, a "Gross Margin" calculated measure might be defined as ([Sales Amount] - [Total Product Cost]). The 70-467 Exam required the ability to identify the need for such calculations and design them as part of the cube.

Introduction to MDX for Calculations

While the 70-467 Exam was a design exam, not a development exam, a conceptual understanding of Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) was necessary. MDX is the primary query and calculation language for Multidimensional models. It is a powerful but complex language that is used to retrieve data from cubes and to define calculations within the cube's script. An architect would not be expected to write complex MDX from scratch, but they needed to understand its role and capabilities. MDX is used to create calculated members and named sets. As mentioned, a calculated member is a measure that is defined by a formula, such as "Year-over-Year Growth." These calculations are a core part of the business logic that is embedded in the cube. A named set is a predefined set of dimension members that is given a friendly name. For example, an architect might create a named set called "Top 10 Products" that is dynamically calculated based on sales revenue. The cube's MDX script is where these calculations are stored. An architect designing the cube would be responsible for specifying the required calculations and working with a developer to implement them in the script. They would also need to consider the performance implications of complex MDX calculations. The 70-467 Exam would test a candidate's ability to design a solution that incorporated these advanced calculations to meet business reporting requirements.

Designing a Tabular Model

Designing a Tabular model, while conceptually simpler than a Multidimensional model, has its own set of design principles that were covered in the 70-467 Exam. A Tabular model project also starts in SSDT. Instead of a DSV, the architect imports tables directly from a source database into the in-memory engine. The model consists of these tables, the relationships between them, and the calculations that are added on top. The core of Tabular model design is creating a clean set of tables and defining the relationships between them. The design should follow the same star schema principles as a data warehouse, with dimension-style tables (called lookup tables) and fact-style tables (called data tables). The architect creates one-to-many relationships between these tables by dragging and dropping columns in the diagram view, which is a much more intuitive process than in Multidimensional models. The in-memory, columnar nature of the Tabular model's xVelocity engine means that it can achieve incredible performance and data compression. However, an architect must still design the model with performance in mind. This includes decisions like hiding unnecessary columns from the client tools, choosing appropriate data types to maximize compression, and partitioning large tables to speed up data processing. The 70-467 Exam required an understanding of these Tabular-specific design patterns.

Designing Security in Analysis Services

Securing the data in the analytical model is a critical responsibility for a BI architect. A comprehensive security plan was a key design requirement for the 70-467 Exam. Both Multidimensional and Tabular models in SSAS use a role-based security model. The architect designs security by creating roles and then assigning Windows users or groups to those roles. Each role is granted a specific set of permissions. Basic permissions include whether a role has administrative access to the database or just read access for querying. The real power of SSAS security lies in its ability to implement row-level and cell-level security. In a Multidimensional model, an architect can use dimension data security to restrict which dimension members a user is allowed to see. For example, a sales manager for the West region can be restricted to only seeing data for customers in that region. In a Tabular model, this is achieved using row filters, which are DAX expressions that define which rows in a table a user is allowed to see. The 70-467 Exam would often present complex security requirements, and the candidate would have to design a role-based security model to implement them. This included designing dynamic security, where the security rules are driven by data in a table rather than being hard-coded into the roles.
