How's your retirement account doing?

Of course even retirement investments are political now. I recall back during the Trump administration a co-irker mentioned how Trump had the economy runnin' full steam, and asked me how my retirement was doing. When I see that guy now I like to ask him the same question, and of course he tells me that his retirement is not doing well, probably not admitting that it's doing just fine.

When we have conversations at work and the subject drifts to non work topics I like to needle the Trumpanzees by saying things like "man, Biden sure has the economy humming eh?" and it always gets the expected replies. I may add in that perhaps we need some of Trump's genius tariff policies to help the economy out even further, if they get too bucky with me.

My retirement is doing spectacularly, but things will change in the 7 years I have to work yet. How is yours doing?

I weep that MAGATS are pro-tariffs which are anti everything republicans used to stand for. They are now a cult of personality

my retirement plan is going quite well. I leave it alone mostly through the ups and downs with occasional reweighting.

Well, I live in Denmark and probably save around 20% of my salary each month for retirement, so no worries.

What's funny is that Trump's tariff policy would be disastrous for people's retirements, assuming those retirement funds are in stocks.

Tariffs -> increased costs for US consumers -> inflation -> rate hikes by the fed -> stocks go down.

Not to mention like the total collapse of US exports abroad as they become uncompetitive due to retaliation.

Still quite a ways off but in my 20's I made a shit ton but saved almost nothing. Even lost my condo in 2008!
30's I started saving.
40's I'm saving more and more!

My only piece of advice.. DO NOT GET A LIVE IN SIGNIFICANT OTHER.

The moment you do.. your expenses TRIPLE!

Ofcourse I'm not doing too well following my own last bit of advice!

Getting my first annuity check from part of my retirement investment on March 1 till I'm 90. The other 1/3 is a chunk of bond funds @ 4.35, the last 1/3 is going for growth equities on a score of 7 out of 10. At 73, I get a minimum of a $20000 a year raise due to the minimum withdrawal law.
I so procrastinated, and finally had 5 1/2 hrs. on Zoom meetings with my fiduciary at Fidelity just last month. Now I have to live!

My retirement has been doing fine. Steady investing in index funds for the long term. Last time I looked, it's around 8% (edit: looked tonight) 10% return per year over a 10 year period, and I have a 25-30 year horizon. Probably would be doing even better if Republicans hadn't foisted unnecessary austerity on us during the Obama years, or stupid economic decisions in the Trump years.

My only piece of advice.. DO NOT GET A LIVE IN SIGNIFICANT OTHER.

You must be either terribly lonely or just incapable of having adult conversations with a SO.

Why even bother seeking out a SO if you just want it to be transactional or half-assed?

I'm joking..

You can say my life plans were utterly ripped apart as I desired loneliness but somehow ended up happy with someone else!

Sure surprised the hell out of me.. but I'm not complaining!

Been with her 12+ years now but yeah I would have been a very different person had I not met her - probably exactly how you describe too!

BTW I too am looking into other indexes.. I have a power index giving me a good chunk this year! I got screwed by the drop early last year!

I don't have much of one. All the caash is tied up in the new home building process.

I do have a pension or two, I have that going for me.
In a word, it is lumpy as fuck.

I largely stick with boring ones that are low cost: a total stock fund (or combination to mimic if total isn't available), an international stock fund, a domestic bond fund, and an international bond fund. Not going to go trying to chase trends.

May have a few additional ones here and there for funsies or just to put some small amount in ESG-style funds.

My 3 year rate of return is 4.5%.

My 4 year rate of return from Jan-2017 to Jan-2021 was 22%. Yes my 401k almost doubled in those 4-years. 10 - year rate of return is 9.7%. My 1-year rate of return is 23.4%. The stock market really hasn't performed well during the Biden's administration so far. I really think whoever is in the Whitehouse has a limited impact on the stock market.

I am invested in Vanguard Index Funds.

Lets look at a bigger picture. Here is the first 4 year S&P500 return of all recent presidents.

Note: Biden isn't in that graph above since he hasn't had 4 years yet. So, here is the first 3 year graph:

What am I to conclude from those lists top to bottom? That Trump is a midpoint between Clinton and GHW Bush? And Biden is an average of GHW Bush and Reagan? Biden is what you get if you cross Eisenhower with Nixon? Trump is what you'd get if Obama and Carter had a baby?

39 here, so I presumably have a ways to go still.

My investments are pretty boring, trad 401K spread across a variety of mixed cap growth funds.

401K is up ~20%+ over the last year.

Also have a boring Vanguard ETF that I dump any extra money at the end of the year into, and it is up ~20%+ YoY as well.

I think it's doing ok but this thread made me login and check on it. It said my last login was over 4 months ago. I probably logged in to make sure my Roth IRA and SEP contributions were deposited correctly and then haven't thought about it since.

I also have a Vanguard account that I put a couple of hundred a month in and it looks ok to but I last logged into that account over 8 months ago. lol

Before anyone chastises me for being to complacent with regards to my retirement accounts I do meet with my advisor once a year to go over things and make sure my wife and I are on track for a comfortable retirement.

If you are young you don't need to keep checking on something like that. It's investing, not trading.
