Wow just had same problem. Flashing to 3.0 now with a 2700x then will try the 3600x to see if it worked. If it works then regular update to 5.6 this killed at least a hour of my day switching cpus around playing update games. Thanks amd

AMD designed a chipset for every version of their processors. I don't remember every revision, but x370 was for Zen 2, x470 for Zen 3 and x570 for Zen 4. The fact that older chipsets now support newer CPUs is a plus for AMD, but its not a magical instant fix. It takes a little work. Intel forces you to buy a new motherboard every revision or almost, so be happy you have a little leeway with AMD, and stop complaining.

If the x570 is designed for zen 4 why did I need to adjust bios at all for the 5700x? (OH because 5700x is zen3 ) but why not just work?) I just bought a new motherboard anyway since after the 3.0 flash nothing boots. Now msi b550 tomahawk is going to take its place and hopefully work out the box. (Fingers crossed)

He has it all wrong. X370 was for Zen 1, X470 was for Zen+, X570 was for Zen 2
No, x570 is for Zen 3, x670 for Zen 4. The older ones I can't remember as well. But I was in error on x570.

Ya that makes more sense because I remember x570 before 5000 series came out. I just wished they sold a x1570 that works out the box with 5 series but they wanted to save money and just skip to am5. Mayne a 1600x would boot with the board but might be best selling on ebay with issue listed. I see broken b550 tomahawk going for more than I paid on Amazon (78 shipped)

The X570S boards were a later update which should support Zen 3 out-of-the-box.

Right here. 5950x with an x570 motherboard bought at the same time, early in the Zen 3 availability timeframe.

Edit: I looked, I bought both of these November 2020. But yes x570 was summer 2019.

and google conformed this:
The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is a desktop processor with 16 cores, launched in November 2020, at an MSRP of $799.

I get that you are pissed because you bricked your board. But blaming AMD here isn't the play. B550 and X570 boards will work with 5000 series processors, they just needed a BIOS update if you bought one before the 5000 series was released. Boards bought today have the current BIOS version to support them. How do you expect a board manufacturer to release a board that works with future CPUs without some sort of an update? That MSI Tomahawk you're buying also didn't work with 5000 series CPUs when they were released. It was updated later just like the AsROCK board.

Well.... I honestly don't remember, just know I installed the fake 5.6 bios with the regular way then the 5.6 with special tool, it all worked. Then foolishly downgraded to 3.0 hoping the 3600x (which honestly could be dead not sure where the cpu is from) would work and I could retire the 2700x and have a 3600x and 5700x with the tomahawk coming today. But instead the board doesn't work and ordered another 550 tomahawk. Hope that all makes sense

Not even mad, but obviously the process is flawed to have to do all this. (Flashed with special tool like it said to and still didn't work.) Will i have to do a special process to get the tomahawk to boot a 3600x and 5700x? Will find out tomorrow morning or tonight if I get around to it.

Mistakes were made. It happens. You could have left the latest BIOS on there and used the Matisse/Zen 2 no worries. Try to boot with the 2700X and 1 stick of ram in slot 2. If it powers on but won't boot after like a minute, then yeah it's probably bricked. But don't throw it away. If it doesn't have replaceable bios chip where you can order another, there are places that will solder a new one on relatively inexpensively. Then you can keep it as a backup or sell it.

If you bought the board from a busy place like Newegg or Amazon, it'll have a bios new enough to support all AM4 CPUs except the very latest just released Cezanne and 3D models. It's been a long time since I bought a AM4 board that couldn't boot Zen 3 out of the box.

But you didn't do it correctly! That's the point. If you had, it would have worked.

If you have a 1xxx or 2xxx series CPU you need to do the workaround from a BIOS version prior to 2.8.
If you have a 3xxx series CPU you could upgrade straight to any BIOS that supported 5xxx series CPUs.

In any case you shouldn't have to do anything to the MSI board when it arrives. Unless it has been sitting on the shelf since 2019-2020 it should have a BIOS that supports the 5xxx series CPUs. My son has that board and uses a 5600X and we had to do nothing to it, all bought in 2021.

And where did you get a "fake 5.6 BIOS" from anyway?

I don't think your board is bricked. According to the ASRock page you need a Matisse CPU (3xxx series) for any BIOS version 3.0 or newer. You just need to install a BIOS prior to that. Notice the bright yellow text in the description field.

So if it doesn't boot with 3600x and doesn't boot with 2700x.... perhaps the 3600x is dead. Will see when next motherboard comes to test it.

Can't flash a board that doesn't post/boot (well maybe blind? ) switched a bios chip before on a 775 that went bad.

Installed with 2700x didn't realize maltise cpu ment 3000 series. It showed like flashed and worked fine but wouldn't work with 5700x. So I called it a fake bios. Doesn't make sense why show it flash show its version but not work so it's a fake flashed bios

Sorry, I thought the board supported BIOS Flashback.

Yes, it seems that the board will allow flashing to any BIOS and it looks like it works during the process, but there is something hardware related that the new CPUs have I guess. To me the BIOS update should check for a proper CPU before upgrading and provide an error message. That would certainly protect the consumer. Maybe you can send the board to ASRock and have them fix it or do as DAPUNISHER mentioned above.

When I built the system in my sig it was early 2020. The only CPUs available for it were Zen 2. I bought an R5 3600. Later on the Zen 3 came out.

tomahawk from Amazon came for the $78 it took 23 mins to swap boards, it had a bios date from 6/23 and booted fine with 5700x no further testing done on 3600x cpu will wait for next board. Seems tiny bit slower with thr 5700x running 3200mhz ram compared to the 2700x and 2133 mhz. But it could just be in my head. Only swapped boards no reinstall and booted right up. Oddly msi had a phone home installed in the board and it tried to auto download Norton 360 and some other garbage. Shame on you msi. But at least the bios page of msi didn't have me bricking motherboards. (No fancy flashing for 5000 support I assumed all motherboards should have )
