Well, all brands allow you to adjust the fan speed with the help of RivaTuner. It's a program that lets you overclock your video card and adjust the fan speed on any graphics card.

Phenom AM2+ cpus

Yes, from what I know AM2+ processors are backwards compatible with the AM2 socket. I even think AM3 is supposed be backwards compatible with AM2.

Question about upgrading 6420 to 8400

Given that the installation is flawless then I don't think there should be any further steps to take other than the "normal hardware stuff." The only risks associated with swapping out CPUs is the process itself as long as the motherboard supports it. If you're not careful you could bend pins...

What to do

Personally I would get a 4870 first and then upgrade your motherboard to a CrossFire capable one (X38/X48, P45?) later down the road once you have enough money. Are you sure you're going to go with a multiple GPU configuration in the future? Because if not you could probably live with a $130 P35...

Creative Audigy SE 7.1

I suggest you get an X48 chipset for DDR3 and CrossFire support. There are several motherboards to choose from with brands like DFI, Foxconn, Asus, and MSI. Personally I'd go with DFI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16813136048) or maybe even Foxconn...

Budget gaming rig- 750i or P45?

If you're thinking of doing a CrossFire setup down the road then P45 is your only choice. But, as DaveSimmons explained, P45 won't get you the best performance you could have with multiple GPUs. As far as I know, the X38/X48 chipsets support full x16/x16 CrossFire support but I'm guessing...
