S@H1 Athlon64 1ch vs 2ch RAM WU times?

Unless you're picking up an Opteron or an A64-FX, there's no such thing as dual channel RAM. You can use multiple sticks, but it won't make any difference in crunch times. The fact that the memory controller is on-die already boosts memory performance far beyond what dual-channel DDR could do...

Free AMD Athlon 64 Screensaver

A64 3200 and 9800 n/p here... garbled as well, although it seems to be tied to the fact that i'm running dual monitors. When I disable the second one, it works fine.

eek, yup, meant mx700. i was typing that with my eyes and brain halfway working.. i think... To the person questioning the weight difference between the 700/1000, the 1000 *feels* lighter to me, but that could very easily be one of two things... The size of the mouse spreading its weight...

Probably get better perf from the 6800. Just add another 512 ram later on whenever ya get a chance.

"IDE and SCSI : RAID Shootout" - still true?

Another note... IDE RAID, specifically RAID 0, has been shown, proven, and hammered into the ground as being a waste... SCSI on the other handseems to have the RAID world locked down, at least in the enterprise. Not sure how well a RAID 0 setup would work using SCSI on a desktop/gaming rig.

Crapload of RAM, and very large hard drives == what he's gonna want. If your friend wants to do it right, no less than a gig of ram should really be considered, esp. if the video clips are larger. Might also wanna think about a Raptor for the system drive (and to install Premiere onto) since...

LCD or CRT? which do you prefer for gaming

CRT would have to be my choice for gaming. I can't speak from direct experience, however, as i've never actually played any games on an LCD, just read the mountains of reviews out there comparing the two. As for cost, however, CRT still wins out, unless desk real estate is hard to come by.

Can't really say wether or not SCSI is worth it without knowing what you plan to do with the system. For most home/gaming/non-server types of applications, SCSI is merely a nice and expensive toy, vs. being truly noticeable and worthwhile... considering the cost. If you're interested in...
