I carry a large backpack full of photographic equipment.
I walk around looking like an idiot.
After an entire day, my shoulders are sore.
Repeat.

Yup, that's also a good camera to consider. Only two things that I didn't like about the unit when I handled it -
i) handled more like a toy than a camera (like some weird gizmo out of a 70's sci-fi movie)
ii) proprietary Minolta flash hot shoe
However it does score where it counts - AF speed...
Hmm... I'll probably get hammered for suggesting this... but if you're looking to take shots at sporting events, you'll need something long and fast (in both optics and autofocus department). So may I suggest a Fujifilm Finepix S7000 instead of the usual Canon P&S suggestions?
Me and my friends...
Well, if you're referring to the built-in flash... they've never been ideal for macros anyway. You'd be better off with an external flash. The sample shots on DPReview show that the camera is compatible with the MT-24EX macro flash... that's an ideal setup but $$$$$

Crash bugs from memory leaks... they are sooo hard to track especially when it's someone else's object that's screwing up my objects. :|
errr... wait... different bug... :P
For me it would be flying, stinging bugs like bees and wasps and stuff... cockroaches too... not sure about spiders...
Any of the Canon Speedlite series should do... try checking B&H to get a rough idea of pricing. Generally, you want to use stick to a Canon Speedlite for its TTL capabilities.

Correct - macro at telephoto increases working distance, which also helps eliminate/reduce flash shadow. Actually almost all macro shots taken with add-on lenses (e.g. close-up & macro filters) will give you the highest magnification at full telephoto and manually focused to infinity.

I would recommend a Canon Speedlite for its TTL features - the 420EX should be powerful enough for the G5... or if you want full manual control or an advanced multi-flash setup then the 550EX would be the way to go.
