Thanks for that, Manko. Do you know if I need a special type of memory module for laptops, or can I just use regular desktop PC-4200 DDR2 ram? What about other types, such as PC-3200? I read somewhere that the PC-4200 dual channel stuff that Dell is using doesn't make that much of a speed...

Does this look good?

I just noticed that in the tech specs for the XPS Gen 2, the Dell website mentions that the memory slots are user accessible. I presume this means that installing more memory will NOT void the warranty. I'd better ask to make sure when I order. Does anyone know for sure about this?

Thanks for the info, bacillus. Do you know how much battery life I might expect to lose from using a 7,200rpm drive, and would the performance gains be worth it? Maybe I'll stick to 5400rpm and upgrade to the fancy new one that you mention when the time comes.

Does this look good?

I'm very seriously considering buying an Inspiron XPS Gen 2 from Dell UK, but it looks like I'm going to have to go with the 512mb option. The reason for this is that Dell charge £400 (~$750 ffs) for an extra 512mb. I need 1gb of ram, but I need £400 more. Everywhere else charges less than...

Here is some info I found. Any more information from other experienced people would be more than welcome. I'm thinking of opting for a 5,400rpm drive now. Bigger, cheaper, potentially more battery life, and not as hot. I think.

I'm just about to buy a laptop (for anyone that read my previous post (but didn't reply.. boo hoo) I'm going for the Dell XPS Gen 2.) I can configure the HDD to be either 4200rpm, 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Now, I'm very tempted to go for the 7200rpm model, which is available at sizes up to 60gb...
