can the two computers ping each other? are u using XPfirewall or any other crappy-donothingbutbug firewall? is TCP/IP set to MANUAL? is the workgroup correct?
Maybe when ur card switches to 640x480 mode the monitor goes out of sync because of high refresh rate. Check the refresh rates supported by your monitor against those of your video card. There's a huge difference between them. You can always try to delete the monitor device and let windows find...
