You don't need a CS degree to learn how to program. All you need is a willingness to learn and to try! Keep playing around with the Raspberry PI and Python and make sure you have some fun with it.

Record your games. Afterwards, you can review them to find "where did it all go wrong?". Also, take a look at your opponents moves and figure out WHY did he make that move?

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been extremely lucky the past few years. The only other advice I can offer people is to have their stone tested. Kidney stones are a mineral deposit. They can be nearly any mineral, but most (like mine) are calcium. Once you know what type of mineral yours...
I second a recommendation for Michael Abrash's "Zen of Graphics Programming". It's one of the best books from that era.

And, of course, they're using Java which has slightly different interpretation of SOAP and how certain things are represented... Ugh. I'm with you. I don't miss this at all.

I would have thought 15 ms resolution (64 ticks per second) would be fine, but it's been a long time since I've dealt with this stuff. Have you looked at the high resolution timer?
