I think one of teh original selling points of Crossfire was that you could mix cards, although the preformance increase would be based on the lesser of the two cards. IOW, the r580 master card would be "dumbed down" to the level of the r520. I think your assessment is fair, but I would...

You could also set your fans to run at 7v instead of 12v which should reduce noise significantly. You can do the wiring yourself of simply buy some adapters for a couple bucks in toto.

The availability, chipset efficacy, and inter-card connectivity of the ATi multi-GPU solution doesn't amount to a hill of beans; however, there are enough beans, in fact, to give me "Butt-fire."
