You can also use NeoOffice (also free), which is an OpenOffice port that doesn't require X11 and is developed by a third party. Eventually there will be an Aqua version of OpenOffice (by the OpenOffice developers).
I am not sure if there is an option to pay for internet usage without getting one of the internet plans or add-ons. Ask at the T-mobile forum at howardforums.com, the people there should know.
There are other systems used overseas, but many or most countries have GSM networks.
Most countries do not have CDMA, so you can't use CDMA-only phone if there is no CDMA network. There may be some phones that use both CDMA (in the US) and GSM (abroad), but I am too lazy to check.
