  1. Studies find taxpayer funded sports stadiums aren't worth it but Oklahoma City citizens ok'd a 1% sales tax to build new ~$1B basketball arena

I grew up in Arlington, TX right in the middle of the DFW area (albeit now live in Austin). Over the past several years they have had all sorts of tax bills to build the Cowboy's stadium and new Texas Rangers stadium in Arlington. While I'm sure the local politicians will talk about all of the...
  2. Christmas tree thread. Lets see them!

Ha, so it is actually for the dog as my home office has the cat food and the 80+ pound puppy dog loooooves to eat cat food. We did have a baby gate when the kiddo was, you know, a baby. However, when we got the 4 legged baby, we needed to change it up for the cats was they are getting older.
  3. Christmas tree thread. Lets see them!

For my home office, I do what I call a "classy" Star Wars tree. It is thematically mostly chrome/silver color along with other non-Star Wars ornaments. The tree topper is a sweet Death Star that does all sorts of lights and sounds. The tree that I have at my office desk is reflective of the...
  4. Other tech/hardware forums? Anand seems empty last few years.

This is my first time checking out ATOT in like. . . oh gosh, years. I was cleaning up my bookmarks and saw this, and thought "Holy hell I totally forgot!" I think many people initially came here because of the old school building rigs and PC gaming stuff. That population would have aged out...
  5. Finally a reason to care about climate change

Upside: Crappy home brewers are going to stop forcing me to try their experiments.
  6. Replacing soda pop with barley malt beverages?

I got confused with the phrase "soda pop."
  7. What is a "network appliance"?

My LG washer is on the network. It pings my phone when it finishes a load. No practical value. Except I get a wee bit of amusement in giving her grief about laundry from the other side of the world. Sorta makes it worthwhile.
  8. "Tom Brady prefer his balls to feel a certain way" - balls underinflated

Actually after the Patriots won, Super Bowl tickets slid in price. Apparently on the whole, nobody wants to see the Patriots play. http://time.com/money/3674936/super-bowl-ticket-prices-cheap-fans-hate/
  9. When people aren't vaccinated...

This story has me pissed off beyond belief. My wife and I took our 5 month son to Disneyland on Christmas and we missed the exposure dates by a few days. The fact that my kid was at risk due to people's stupidity just infuriates me everytime I see a new article stating that more and more people...
  10. "Tom Brady prefer his balls to feel a certain way" - balls underinflated

I don't think they should automatically lose their spot. However, I do think Belichick should be banned for life, or at least a minimum of several years. Getting relatively minor slaps is apparently not sufficient. Seems bizarre that baseball banned Pete Rose for life for gambling; the NFL...
  11. "Tom Brady prefer his balls to feel a certain way" - balls underinflated

That's the thinking; easier to grip especially if wet.
  12. I owe Uncle Sam money this year, any way to avoid this?

I did that entire 1099 bit as well, and as far I as I could ever tell you cannot deduct your commute to your workplace as an expense. And, seriously, $300?? I'm not saying $300 is chump change (well maybe on ATOT) but at the end of the day, that is pretty much nothing for taxes.
  13. Science fiction books about space exploration

Maybe I'm on outlier, but I really didn't care for 'Blindsight.' It was pretty hardcore and interesting, but just entirely too tedious to read. I did enjoy the "Lost Fleet" series by John G. Hemry/Jack Campbell (pen name). While not exactly space exploration, it sorta is, and is probably one...
  14. California giving drivers license's to illegals

Crap schools like University of Michigan, Chicago, Northwestern, Case Western, Carnegie Mellon, University of Texas, Rice, Emory, Auburn. . . and others.
  15. Pair locked in unlocked closet for 2 days

Germany, you're up! What crazy nonsense have you been doing lately?
