Building a file server for home.

Jack, regarding Windows Home Server: 1) Does the auto mirroring work well? Can it be trusted? If I have 2 drives and one takes a dump, what happens to the information? Also, since the drives don't have to be the same size, let's assume that I have 2 drives (1 is 250GB and 1 is 750GB and I...

    Please recommend a NAS

Nice recommendation with that VIA C7. I've been looking into it and it seems like it would work perfectly! Do you know if there are any C7 motherboards that will do RAID out of the box? Or is a PCI card required?

Build NAS or go with Linksys, Buffalo, etc

Work with me folks! The wish list was basically the cheapest I could find for comparison purposes (compared to NAS products from Linksys, Buffalo, etc). I do have a bit of a flex with the pricing and therefore the components I use. Zap, are you saying I should build a small server and then...

Build NAS or go with Linksys, Buffalo, etc

Well, what parts would you suggest? What about it looks like a "recipe for early death"? My wish list only includes 1 hard drive, yes. But, I will be adding at least one more in the not too distant future. So, wouldn't my data be ok even if, say, the motherboard took a crapper? Going...

Build NAS or go with Linksys, Buffalo, etc

It's for multiple computers so I really do need something more central than external USB drivers. I might also plan on pointing the various computers "My Documents" directory to a share on said server so that everyone knows anything put in there is backed up (provided I go with RAID). I am...

    Weird problem with my pc

I suppose only you can tell us where the whine is coming from. If you can reproduce the high frequency whine and you suspect the hard drive or power supply, unplug the hard drive and that will tell you where it's coming from. My guess is if you have a cheap power supply, thats probably where...

Build NAS or go with Linksys, Buffalo, etc

I'm in need of some storage for my home network which will primarily be used for backups. Those backups will most likely be made by Acronis TrueImage. Whether I go with a customer built PC for this purpose or one of the "out of box" solutions it will go in the basement where all my network...

    Issue when adding more memory

Here is the solution (should be anyway, just played 3 hours of TF2 without a hitch). I had my dual channel memory in slots 1 and 2. As far as I know, this isn't the way dual channel should be, but thats what it said in my manual and thats how it had been working. The problem was that when I...

    Issue when adding more memory

I did run memtest. I had gotten errors initially but then I changed some settings around in the BIOS and no more errors. This is really pissing me off, there is a huge difference between 1GB and 2GB of memory. Right now I am only using 1GB otherwise it locks up.

    Issue when adding more memory

Well, I tried with loose timings (slowest the BIOS auto set everything for) with voltages from 2.5 to 2.8. All produced the same result. The machine runs fine with only my old sticks and it runs fine with only the new sticks but when paired together, especially gaming, they crash and burn...

    Issue when adding more memory

I have been using a pair of 512MB Mushkin Level II V2 memory in my computer for the last couple of years. When using this memory the computer automatically selects 2-2-2-6 as the correct timings and all is well. About a month ago I purchased 2 sticks of Mushkin memory. I don't know what the...

Burn an installed program so that it's installable again, not just system files?

There is no way to do this for most programs. If you listed some of the programs we could give you a better answer. If you legally own a license for the software there are programs that will show you what the registration and/or serial numbers are for those programs. You can then use your...
