if the gtx 295 was good enough, why are nv fans looking at these benches at all... if its the fastest card then why care who's the fastest single if it doesnt matter and games dont need it...
thats what i've read. they dont need to upgrade to a faster gpu because no games need it. besides...
well in his second post he/she did say they have "always" been a green supporter so i assumed thats their preference, which is why i just said 295 since green is what he/she is accustomed to.
i dont like to push people to uncharted waters until they have done enough research to make the jump...
well if the enthusiast plays games like crysis, does some websurfing and does some video editing stuff (i hear nvidia has some apps that are good at that) and the said enthusiast prefers nvidia. also doesnt seemed concerned with power draw, heat and the like. let him/her get a 295 and enjoy :)
just took a look at newegg and 5870 just came and took a dump on gtx 285's price bracket.

you would have to use another program besides catalyst control center as far as i know. like ati tray tools and i believe rivatuner but i have never used rivatuner. but i have been using ati tray tools since i used to have and overclocked 4850.

i think at the time the 4870x2 came out, nvidia wasnt planning on making a dual card but was forced by the hand amd dealt with the 4870x2. so what was being compared was the flagships of both brands at the time. nvidia's flagship was planned to be gtx 280 with the "can of whoop ass" comments...

let me know if i am off topic as i do not want to derail this thread, but i read on another forum that they got the physx effects to work on the cpu with the batman demo. i'll post link if its appropriate. i think the discussion is on physx is an interesting one no doubt.
that better drivers talk is highly subjective, each camp has their problems. Choose whichever you can get the cheapest as either would be good at that resolution. 4850 more overkill at your res leaving you cpu bottlenecked. As mentioned above your money should be spent on upgrading mb , cpu ...

thank you for the help folks, i think i'm headed in the right direction going with the nvidia after careful consideration and that xfx warranty looked good as well... won't hurt to try them out.
