Is this a virus or a HD problem?

Hi there, My gf has an Inspiron 2600 with a 20GB HD that will lock up at a black screen right after the BIOS screen. I tried booting with the XP disc and booting into Safe Mode, but it hangs up at the same spot. The Dell Diagnostic disc was able to load and tell me that the HD is functioning...

Need notebook suggestion

Abhi, thanks for the suggestion, I don't know why I dismissed the 600m when I buzzed the Dell page a while back (perhaps the 60GB hard drive?). Anyone else got a contender?

Need mobo suggestion for older rig

Thanks for the suggestion, Cerb, that Abit looks pretty nice. Are those onboard graphics gonna outperform my ATI card? Would I be better off just doing a transplant into one of those Dell PE 400sc deals (ooooooo, near silent fans)?

Student loan consolidation?

Are there any digital picture frames out there that don't require a subscription to some useless download service? I know Kodak and Kensington offered one, but they appear to have been discontinued and only the subscription based Ceiva remains for sale. Does it strike anyone else as ludicrous...

What happened to my XP login/shutdown windows?

Installed XP on my new HD and I have "old school" login/shutdown windows instead of the more colorful and pleasing versions I got with my last two XP installs. I had a service pack install abort on me because of, ahem, product key issues - did the partial install affect the login/shutdown...

Best generic Epson ink jet cartridges?

I went with Inkcarts for my Epson 880. They didn't have the absolutely lowest prices, but their site looked a lot more professional than the competition. I think I got six black carts for $25 shipped w/ coupon - great service, probably been through about 200 pages in 4 months, still on first...

Touchpad acting up

Do you have to shut down to switch in/out PCMCIA cards?

I'm new to the world of laptops and the manufacturer of my wireless card says it is necessary to shut down the laptop before switching the card in or out - is this sensible hardware advice or just litigious filler?

Video/Sound Editing Rig: Suggestions?
