I see that is a unique motherboard. I would recommend something like this: Promise Ultra133 TX2
I have installed the 100 version before and I can tell you what is involved. First thing is that they want the computer up and running with an operating system. I found it helpful to use two hard...
It's true that you can use an IDE card to boot a driver larger than the BIOS was able to recognize (older hardware and the manufacturer no longer produces flash upgrades for this particular motherboard). I've used a Promise PCI IDE Card before and the computer will boot from the new BIOS that...
You need a motherboard that has a bios that supports 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA) . You may need to trade-in for a newer model to have this capability.
You can use ATITool that is a free program. It has a settings feature that allows you to control the fan based on temperature. It also displays the card temperature in the tray.
I have my X800 set at 40 degrees C. If you want the fan to run all the time, I suppose you can set the temperature...
I've had to increase the size of the paging file in Windows virtual memory to eliminate crashes on the computers I've built. I did get error messages giving me a clue it was memory related.
I have an Asus board and there were no chipset drivers available to download from their website. I had to use the installation CD that came with the motherboard for the chipset drivers.
I don't see that motherboard listed on Plextors Website as being compatible. I know someone who got a 712-SA to work on a K8N Neo2 Platinum by using the Microsoft driver on the SATA controller instead of the nVidea driver.
Reinstall NIC/LAN driver and/or rollback the driver to the one on the motherboard support cd. The Microsoft update lan drivers reportedly can cause freeze ups with BitTorrent
For an older model motherboard like the MSI K7N2 Delta2 FSR (nforce2), I'd go with the 1st gen. SATA drive. I would get the SATA-II drive w/ NCQ for the latest model motherboard. I would think they would be backwards compatible, but I have heard of some people having problems with NCQ on old...
I think that power supply is rated at 16 amps on the 12v+ rail. You should use a power supply with at least 18 amps for a Athlon xp 3500+. The Geforce 6800 GT 256meg uses about 65 watts, more power drain.
I have the same motherboard with a Athlon xp 4000+ and use a Antec Neo Power 480 watt...
Did your Sony VAIO RS420 come from Sony with the Leadtek 6600GT AGP card? Is that something that was upgraded?
That is a small case, maybe heat could be a factor. I always like to spring for better fans. Around 20 decibles is quiet enough for me with increased airflow over the stock fans.
Your computer uses the paging file no matter how much RAM you have. Windows by design will dump stuff from memory to the paging file that it thinks it doesn't need.
I would try increasing the size of the paging file. I increased mine by a few hundred and Doom3 crashed nomore.
I built a computer with the Asus P4P800E-Deluxe a few months ago. I used the cd disk that came with the motherboard. It looked like many of the drivers weren't available to download on the Asus website.
