Thanks aigo! We just got the case in, a custom U2-UFO from mountain mods so finally starting to plan out the loop. Probably going to start in the "back" half of the case with the res/pump/1st rad all together at the 3 rear exhaust fan mounts, then go over the mobo to the cpu, down to the NB...

So a friend of mine is putting together a crazy custom water loop, though it's his first, and I'm trying to help him out with what little I know. What do I know? Not nearly enough... time to ask the experts! He wants to do what sounds backwards to me... which is setup the loop with the rads...

Fan conroller question

I agree with mfenn. I haven't used a fan controller in my last two builds. I use a combo of Scythe SFLEX 21Fs which are dead silent at 100% (1600rpm, 64CFM) and some higher-power fans that my BIOS manages pretty well. Manual options for 50-100%, as well as an auto which I don't use. Overall...

Is SATA hot swappable?

Yes USB is hot swappable, but USB storage devices tend to be detected as just that; "removable disk/storage" as windows like to call it. I'm not sure if this will invoke the correct protocol for the disk to be detected as a hard drive by the SATA controller. Not to mention caching options...

Is SATA hot swappable?

As dac7nco said, it depends on the motherboard, or more specifically the chipset. Also, though SATA2 controllers support hot-swap I don't think this will function via a USB adapter. I think it only works over SATA/eSATA ports.

GTX 280 or X1950PRO

Actually the previous flagships to the 280 were the 9800GTX and 9800GX2. As an owner of a 280 up until recently, I'd defo get another. It was still taking everything at max settings 1900x1200 without too much sweat.

Q6600 overclocking

Sorry to chime in so late! This reminds me a lot of my own chip. My chip will do 6x400 at stock (board default 1.25), 7x400 at 1.3125, and needs 1.42v to run 8x400. That's with LLC, without I was using 1.5125 for 100% stability @ 3.2Ghz. My chip won't do 3.6, I'm not happy pushing the...

Avg shelf life of TIM?

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I suddenly have a need for some TIM and I've just realized the half-used tube of AS5 I have lying around with my supplies is like.... 4 or 5 years old. It should still be good right? I mean the cured version works fine for years under heatsinks around...

Rainbow pixels = EOL?

So I got a 470 for my 280. Mixed feeling on that. I know I get DX11 and a newer chip, but a more cut down chip. The theoretical texture and memory bandwidth is actually down from the 280. Off to test some games!
