Roger that, Mark. I was thinking of the folks that viewed a p55 board and an x58 board as a wash and were looking for the one consideration that would help them decide. For those folks, I'll bet the chance to spend an additional 1K is not a motivator.

But....now look more critically at your "short term" logic, comparing the cost vs benefit of gulftown between now and 1 year from now. For the modest gains in most areas, would anyone spend 1K for a processor upgrade?

I can't help but be amused by the comments present in the new review threads for the hexacore. Not a single x58 owner is excited by the upgrade potential. At least 6 comments from x58 owners state they plan to wait until Sandy Bridge for their next upgrade (as I plan to do). This idea that...

When you disable LLC, the number you are entering into bios has a different meaning, is it no longer the actual voltage your cpu will see, but rather a boundary for transients, a true "max voltage". So, by setting vcore in bios to 1.3, LLC disabled, your cpu would see, something much less...

My sense would be to DISable LLC, and then set the vcore in bios to whatever you need to (within reason) to end up with 1.25v as measured by cpuid under load. Now you would have the 1.25v that you desire, AND a known maximum limit to any transient (defined as that value in the bios)...

I'm impressed and surprised by your success! We have similar equipment. You've gotten a much higher stable overclock than I. Perhaps you got lucky and got a great cpu. Maybe the big difference is that our risk tolerance is much different. I stay away from enabling LLC, as I love the idea...

sure, I wish you luck. My sense of this is folks always overvalue future upgrade concepts. Imagine that I save money on an 1156 mobo/cpu now. I won't state a value, cuz it always makes folks defensive. But we both know there is some savings. You chose to buy x58 and not save whatever that...

Best beginner/budget case

Must throw in a word for tooless...the lancool k60b is my first "tooless" case. I enjoyed building in it. IMHO, the only part of assembling a computer that I would be happy to do without is fumbling with the screws on the expansion cards, and motherboard. For the motherboard, lancool provides...

Do you find it harder to justify upgrading these days?

I think its certain that hardware evolution has outpaced entertainment software evolution. This is pretty logical, making hardware faster, providing larger bandwidths, this seems like a challenge whose goal is clearer, than evolving the "fun" of a user to a higher level from within the...

Intel i5 750 Overclocking Advice/Help

You realize that by turning ON LLC, you are removing your safety margin against transient spikes. I would never do that while setting vcore at a high level (I think of 1.4 as pretty high).

Thoughts on the latest Lian-Li cases?
