Windows XP and Mechwarrior 2

Can Mechwarrior 2 be installed and run in Windows XP? I tried to install MW2 in XP, using and administrator account, and the installer program would not work. I got one of those Windows has encountered a problem errors and then installer quits. Is there a way I can overcome this? I've tried...
