Using 802.11g with 802.11b type laptops

i recall reading about some routers that were able to maintain both g and b traffic separately, and that was nearly a year ago. good luck finding the current and true answer

Wireless connection, share to other pc via cat5 cable

right off the bat, ICS is an easy option, but the new pc would have to be online first of course. and you'd need a crossover cable to directly network to computers without a router, which leads to the question: Why not get a cheapie router? that netgear mr714 or something is about $25 and works...

USB2 - never works

i bought a plumax from newegg about a month ago and it has worked over all four xp computers i have. a dell optiplex at work, two laptops, and the home desktop. without sp1, the enclosure and 2.0 card readers would operate at 1.1 on my desktop until reinstalled with sp1, but all the other sp1...

i used to read about a lot of printers over at computers.com. i'd start my research/browsing there and then go to specific sites, but computers.com is really all i read for printers

Is Wireless Networking Really So Expensive?

cmetz is right, 11b stuff is extremely cheap. pcmcia cards are $20ish, pci cards and usb adapters are $30ish. of course, try harder and you can knock about $5 off each one

Need help on setting up a network.

i only use about 500 connections on emule, and have never had crashes on my router. haven't tried the 1000+ limit though. i've had the linksys befsw-something(that really popular one), a belkin 54g, and now a netgear wtg624ish router and they've all behaved with emule and bittorrent. speeds...

i'm sure what you're asking can be done, but through software and not hardware, but what makes you think a router can't handle bittorrent or emule? if anything, i'd say the router works much better as the sharing is hardware and not software based. plus, ICS requires the host computer to be...

yeah, wireless routers are too cheap to consider the alternative of a separate AP/router combo, and getting just an access point, which is what you were thinking wireless routers are, might be spendier than getting an all-in-one. upgrade and just toss the old one to a friend, as its infinitely...

give them some static ip and see if you can ping something online, or even the router for that matter. that'd give a few clues

Glamorous question - are ATI fans as loud as I think?

noise is relative and that goes without saying, but i've concluded that something is wrong. i received my 8500 today and that fan makes nearly no noise at all, or at least its drowned out by the other things in there. hopefully this thing will go back where it came from. thanks

the passive cooling idea would've worked once upon a time for me, but then i'd have to find a small heatsink and another slot fan, and then i'm down almost half the cost of the card...and my current slot fan just died to boot. i appreciate your suggestion, but i'm really looking for...
