OS X Tiger..

My iBook 12" 1.2GHz runs much quicker on Tiger than Panther. Our machines have very similar specs, altho I am limited to 1024x768. Even when I span the screen to have an extra 1280x960 desktop it moves along just fine. I do not, however, magnify my dock. Same GPU, similar everything else...

What is the most "standard" linux distro

Your lack of knowledge is spreading to other threads now. Having the same filesystem layout and binary/library/config locations does not mean that the product is the same in any way. It only means the products are highly compatible with each other. Which is the point of wanting a standard in...

So every Linux distro listed here will look, feel, and act the same? They all have the same filesystem layouts and identical binary/library/config locations?

Say good bye to your Hard Drive

As much as it is fun to bash Microsoft, I can't think of a piece of hardware that MS makes that you can't use with another OS. Their wireless stuff is close, but it all still works fine in a heterogeneous network.

What is the most "standard" linux distro

There's no real 'standard' for linux. However, if you want to operate in an environment that is most like what enterprise Linux looks like, you will want to use Redhat or SUSE. Personally, I love Slackware and have heard great things about Ubuntu.

Seriously, Longhorn is already a huge failure internally and will only be a large success in the market by default. As always, Microsoft will extort the OEMs into paying for a preloading their new machines with Longhorn and ban them from continuing to use XP. Longhorn is an internal failure...

Mac OS 8.6 File Sharing

Good luck with that...before OS X, the MacOS was a networking pile of junk. It has been over 4yrs since I used any Windows on a regular basis, but I believe that Win9x shipped with AppleTalk client and/or protocols for networking. Go to your network properties and look for them under 'Add'.

Format this system.

Windows will automatically want to format the drive, since it cannot read any of the partitions as it stands. Just get y ourself a WinCD and install. Unless you'd rather run an OS that doesn't suck ;)

Ubuntu Usability review

This guy is well known as a UI nazi. Yes he's anal, but that's his job. Regardless of what the tech-oriented people want to think, these things matter and contribute to the usability of the computing environment. As a nerd who switched to the Mac a couple years ago, I find glaring UI...

Apple's Tiger Site seems to be suggesting that Quartz 2D is indeed being piped into Quartz Extreme, although the requirements wouldn't be right. Quartz 2D Extreme requires the same hardware as CoreImage. I guess we will find out later...

I'm pretty sure that this is not true. This was true for the WWDC build, but needless to say we've come a long way since then. As soon as I find someone running Tiger on supported hardware, I'll let you know for sure.
