Question Does over-provisioning accomplish anything useful for typical SSD use?

I just got a Crucial MX500 SSD, and the software that comes with it recommends reserving at least 50GB for "over-provisioning," to provide space for load leveling. But when I was trying to find out more about it, I found this post from a Micron employee, talking specifically about Crucial SSDs...

Newegg SS: Seagate SSHD ST4000DX001 4TB 64MB SSD Cache SATA 3.5" Hybrid $135 FS

I bought one of these a few months ago, and have been using it as my boot drive for Win8 and now Win10. I don't see much benefit from the SSD, but I haven't had any problems with it, either, and the price per TB is pretty good.

That is good news. I hope that means that if I get a new motherboard or something in the future, I can call MS and switch the key over, and still use both versions.

I have images of my Win8 drives, so I wouldn't have to reinstall it; I'd just restore it, unless Microsoft does something with my activation to prevent it. In any case, the first thing I did after I installed Win10 was delete the Windows.old folder, because it makes the backup image about 50%...

I didn't think Win10 would corrupt the Win8 drive, but I thought they might check the hardware hash on the Win8 drive and see that it was the same as one that was already registered as Win10, and block one or the other. No reason they should, since I obviously can only run one at a time, but...
