Is this a Silicon Image onboard s-ata controller?
I had a similar problem going from a 400 to a 1tb drive on a A7N8X deluxe motherboard until I downloaded the driver directly from SI.
Try enclosing the 1st path in quotes. For example,
robocopy "m:\documents and settings\bob\my documents" l:\docs
you shouldn't need quotes around the 2nd path b/c there aren't any spaces in that path.
The old ribbon-style cable you're referring to is Parallel ATA. The smaller one you have now is the newer format, Serial ATA. Note that the S-ATA cables can come loose without any noticeable sign so make sure they're snug.

Is it possible that there were multiple video drivers listed for your model of laptop? I.e. the model is offered with integrated or a separate video card?
