ghost doesn't use any windows routines. it may have been a static buildup, a bad capacitor or a failing device. try unplugging the comp from the wall for an hour or two, reset the cmos and boot to safe mode the next time it happens. most likely, one or the other will fix it.
as for myself, there is simply no point in jumping into vista due to the cost of updating four home computers and a few other factors. game (and other) developers have to support xp for many years or face losing the business. even if ms sells five million vista os's in X months it will only be...
most likely you changed drive letters. select "repair using the recovery console" option on the xp cd and type:
fixboot <enter>
fixmbr <enter>
exit and reboot computer.
mine doesn't do that. ms must have shares in hard disk companies. whatever is doing it then kill it. it's most likely the locater service which is a lame duck anyway.
looks like windows xp wiped out your partition table. to the best of my knowledge, i still don't think anyone knows why it happens. your files will still be there and the free recovery tool below may help you recover most of them:
