Switch no router

I agree with you JackMDS to an extent. There are somethings you can do with smoothwal/ipcop/linux software router that you can't do with a cheap hardware router. Like stateful packet inspection, special "zones", vpn termination. But then again these type of services are not really needed for...

Need advice on Linux OS to use !!!

Linux is really stable compared to home versions of windows, windows can be stable if you don't play. That being said linux is a great unix flavour desktop replacement, thats free, stable and oh so configurable. BSD wins though for a unix flavour server with stability, there are uptime reports...

Steel foam ?

Wasn't that the stuff they were going to put on tanks, basically it can absorb a few direct hits before becoming useless, just another layer of armour really. I can't remember specifics though, I think metallic glass will be the better of the two...

Calin - But at our current consumption of crude oil means that every peice of farmable would need to be used to grow the plants to fuel our cars, meaning we would have no where to live and no food to eat, we have to find something else...

RAID1 vs Non RAID??

there are other reasons to backup, what if both discs fail, what if there is a fire/flood/other natural disaster, I personally don't have any raid yet, I gotta clear the space first, but I do make backups to dvdrw's and store them offsite.

Question about Exchange

yeah MS recommend you don't have your domain controllers exposed to the internet, but most small business I know can only afford one server, so it usually does it all, mail, web, terminal services, ad, etc.

ah then we are saying the same thing... a mesh design or having big fat uplinks is always good. Mesh= switch 1 is connected to switch 2 and 3, and 3 is connected to 1 and 2, if each port is only 100mb this provides 200mb for inter-switch communication, not really the best but every little bit...

Home Network setup

An ethernet hub/switch has rj45 ports in it, so the cable that plugs in has to have an rj45 plug on it. The "hub" as they call it is actually a simple 8-port patch panel, up the top is the equivelent of a punchdown, you will still need a punchdown tool, and that is pretty expensive for an 8port...

what network hardware do you like?

the cover has nothing to do with how good/robust etc it is, just with netgears, the plastic ones tend to be made in china, and are of average quality, hence the yum-cha nickname, the metal ones are usually made in japan if I remember rightly and are of better quality, I have seen the plastic...

it is very easy, cat5 is made for rj45, just gotta get the pairs setup etc, need a crimping tool, and a bit of practice, takes me about 5minutes for a network cable with the wiring diagram infront of me, but I know a guy who can do them in about a minute, from his head. If you are laying a run...

Ellisz - I am confused at what you want to do, if you are asking can telephony and network be run over the same cat5, then yes you can with a little hacking, as 100mb only uses 4 of the 8 wires, I had to make a could of cables to split this off for a customer. It is not the best solution though...

I have used and tested a heap of brands. I stick with/recomend Netgear (non-yum-cha, ie non plastic crap), Linksys, some D-Link (you can be unlucky with these guys), Cisco(except I can't afford it) and an Australian brand Alloy(make decent stuff cheap for locals). For firewalls, snapgear(cheap)...
