p.s. my current set up involves several physically separate drives 1) 80 gb OS/apps drive 2) 1 tb picture drive (main copy of all pics) 3) 500 gb music library/back up of pics 4) 500 gb back up of pics (continued) the #1 drive will be replaced with the 300gb 10k VR looks like i won't...

WD 300GB 10k VR partition question

Hi all, Just got my velociraptor today to use as a boot drive. I was wondering how I should partition the drive. My friend suggested 200gigs for OS and programs and then 80gigs for Photoshop scratch and also thumbnail cache, etc. I do a lot of photo editing and plan to do some video...

I don't think I will be running RAID5. My hard drive budget is currently $150ish to $300ish. The reason I picked that amount of budget is I want to replace two drives. Currently I have 80gig 7200.7 boot drive (from my freshman year in college, dell desktop from 2004) 250gig 7200rpm for...

thanks for the advice. when you say separate drives, you are talking about separate physical drives, correct? not separate partitions? as for the scratch disk...is the scratch disk supposed to perform well with random access or sequential? i have this vague concept in my mind that scratch is...

thanks a lot for the replies, guys! wow, raid 5 requires 4 drives. pretty expensive. but as you said, worth it down the road, perhaps. so most people would suggest having a drive for OS & apps and a separate drive for media? i think i will go with a WD caviar black for my media storage...

Thanks cusideabelincoln. I was just the tiniest bit worried that they weren't as many people buying it and the rating was slightly worse, so I thought there may be something hidden i didn't know about. So I'm guessing ddr3-1600 is good enough for a 3.8ghz overclock on the i7?

thank you so much for your information, pjkenned. Very much appreciated! You mentioned that the 7200RPM drives is about 120mb/s. As a comparison, what is the VR's sequential data rate? And yes, I frequently hit several gigabytes when I go out these days. Not hard when I shoot RAW..25 megs...

Computers now are so fast for every day tasks

i need a faster cpu for photo and video processing. my 2.7ghz core 2 duo is starting to stutter. i would love an i7 got a canon 5D mark II and i'm dabbling in HD videos
