What software and hardware do I need that will provide decent results with video editing? I have tons of Hi-8 tapes that I'd like to edit and transfer back to VHS as well as DVD formats. Don't need professional quality but not crap either. Any other places to find this type of info?

Looks like you got your moneys worth out of your existing drive (5 years!!). If you've been able to use 3.2 Gigs for so long, do you really need to jump all the way to 80 Gigs? Just a thought I had
Oldfart - Great call on the "dxdiag"...found out it's running a blazing fast Pentium MMX 200Mhz ;) Wasn't there an "overdrive" upgrade CPU for these systems? Just trying to figure out if anything can be done to boost this baby or if it's stuck in the land of word processors forever.
I couldn't get into the BIOS screen. When I power up, it goes straight to Windows starting so I assume this means Compaq does block the bios info (?) . I'm actually surprised the thing fires up...should have seen how dirty it was when I put it in the car :)
Guess part of me was hoping to find...
Need some help & advice...Just brought home an old Compaq Deskpro from work - hope to use it as the kids computer if it's even worth ugrading. I'm listing some of the info I know about the computer below and need help with the info I don't know about. Secondly, what upgrade advice you would...
This one's for the wife...she really seems hell bent on having an all-in-one printer, scanner, fax, copier. She operates a small business out of the home and thought the multi-function printer to be the best option. I have zero experience with these units but have always assumed that they just...
As stated, I'm not a big movie fan - whether it be at the movie theatre or a home theatre. However, for some people it may be yet another great use for the computer.
By the posts so far, I don't think there is enough software titles to warrant a DVD purchase (for me). Merely adding the DVD...
Well, at least I'm glad to know that I'm not too "old school" (yet!!!). I can see the encyclopedia or world atlas software regarding storage capacity but not much else. I will sleep better tonight knowing that there's one less thing I'm NOT missing out on :)
What type of software is out there that would coax me into needing a DVD unit to go along with my CDRW? Can't see watching a movie at my desk and don't understand the attraction. Maybe I'm way behind on the learning curve so fill me in...
Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback concerning the overclocking issue. It seems more reasonable to me that the best purchase would be to get a Northwood chip (whether I overclock it today or not). I may pay more for a Northwood than one of AMD's offerings but I would get more milage out of it. Basically...
In various threads, I notice that when providing feedback/advice to someone regarding hardware purchases, the provider usually asks about whether the person is overclocking or not - please explain why.
I'm assuming the answers lies within 2 generalizations 1) Intel overclocks better than AMD...
Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking in the $300-400 range max whichever way I decided to purchase. They don't need much...just enough to keep them off mine:)
A Mac??? Say it isn't so...just one more thing to have to worry about corrupting my kids!:D
I want a system for my pre-schooler & 2nd grader. Obviously their computing time is spent with simple games and learning software. What would you recommend putting inside a case for them? I plan on it being modest yet capable of running "Reader Rabbit", etc. :)
On the other hand, is this...
