Since there is no Linux support, the HP 2600 is completely ruled out. I had decided on it, when I discovered that problem. So, another lost sale for HP because of that.

As far as I can see the pins on the mobo is not shorted and it starts even without me plugging in the case buttons. And I can only insert the power connector in one direction since it has a gazillion guides.

The MS(cough) Natural Pro is best if it wasn't for all those extra buttons but if you can live with, or rather pay for it. It is the best one. Other wise the one HP sends with their workstations are great. No annoying clicks and perfect resistance. A real quality product.
I'd agree but I use the 630U almost the same thing. Great quality and as small as they come. The issues reported online have been resolved with the new drivers.
The thermal greese made for procs aren't conductive.
Since you have removed the pads the fit between core and cooler will not be perfect making it possible for it to shift. Putting it in a moving enviroment eg van, puts the proc at high risk of wear and ultimatly destruction.
