Worth going from a 770 4GB to a 970?

I would say yes, if you need the extra performance and your son may get into more high powered games as he gets older. Here in the UK you can pick up 970's from about £260 quid, maybe cheaper in the US though. The EVGA SC version is £288 over here.

Why would/did you buy an AMD CPU?

I'm using a Phenom X4-965be at 3.8ghz only because I had an AM3 board with a X3-435 on it. Couldn't afford a new mobo at the time and the socket won't take an FX. Next Xmas though, I'm looking to get Mobo/CPU and SSD so I'm curious how the land will lie at that time. Would still like to go AMD...

Video Card installation issue.

Can I suggest you reset your motherboard BIOS before you do anything? Pull the battery out or short the pins for 30 seconds. I had issues when changing my video card and PSU at the same time which were only resolved by doing this.

Bear in mind that the 7770 requires a 6 pin power connector and the 7750 doesn't so you might want to check to see if your power supply has one. If it doesn't, get the 7750 but look at the spec of it first before you part with your money, some 7750's, usually the pre-overclocked ones, do require...

How do I update the drivers on my GPU?

Just go to the AMD website and download/install the latest whql one. Are you running a beta? The latest whql is 13.12 I think
