I wouldn't be doing high speed trading and gaming is secondary to me, so I'm fine with that. As long as for most workstation type tasks and video editing there is little impact, I'd be fine. Still deciding whether to go with the much cheaper Ryzen 3900x and making do. It's about $1000 less...

For Threadripper 3960x, 3970x, and 3990x on TRX40, if I opt to go with ECC RAM, of which the fastest available seems to be 2666mhz, what kind of performance hit can I expect by going with ECC vs faster and cheaper non-ECC RAM at 3200-3600mhz?

Thanks. Yes, I don't really need one. I was really annoyed by how long it took for an Internet Explorer window to pop up and thought it was because of my lower ST from the 1950x, but then I tried Chrome and it comes up more snappily. But usually IE doesn't take that long on other systems...

So I currently have a 1950x system with a Radeon VII, to be used primarily for video editing. It has very good multi-threaded performance that will make it very good for video editing, but the base core clock speed of the 1950x makes it less snappy feeling when loading apps and opening/closing...

Threadripper 1950x + X399 Gigabyte Designare + Vega 64 FE vs Ryzen 3900X + X570 for Video Editing, software development + occasional gaming only?

Are you sure 3rd gen TR are still on their roadmap? If so, good point. Hopefully the new threadrippers are compatible with the x399. I guess the main thing I wouldn't be able to get is PCIE 4.0 if I kept my existing platform and just upgraded CPU.

So I bought a Threadripper 1950X + X399 Gigabyte Designare motherboard + Vega 64 FE in 2018. The 1950x cost me about $580, motherboard about $240, Vega 64 FE about $500. The 1950x can now be had brand new on eBay for $420 or so. The Vega 64 FE new goes for about the same as the 1950X new...

4K video editing using VNC/RDP to system across the room possible with 10 gigabit ethernet?

I'd be running at a true 4K display resolution. Cable length matters. I think the maximum passive cable length is like 3 meters, which fall short of what I need. I'll need at least 6 meters. Active cables can go longer but longer runs affect bandwidth, so I'd need to determine where the cut...

4K video editing using VNC/RDP to system across the room possible with 10 gigabit ethernet?

I would need a 25' video cable in order to have the 4K editing rig across the room share my main monitor, keyboard and mouse. Instead, I was hoping I could use 10gbe cards and vnc/rdp to get into the video editing rig from my main day-to-day pc. Would this work without issue?

One can opt for 128g base storage option and use tb3 external sad for storage or for everything including boot. Concern about soldered chip capacity or longevity become non issues.
