I got an 1800FP about a month ago and have not experienced either of those problems. The top of the lcd is very cool to the touch even after being on for hours and hours, and I have not noticed anything remotely close to the opaque highlighting you describe. I have no idea what would cause those...
I ordered mine around 10PM last night, I got a tracking number by calling Dell. They shipped it via UPS, doh, but the UPS site still says the tracking number does not exist. I suppose I just need to wait a bit... or is there some sort of a work around to find out where the thing is exactly?

EDIT: I guess this is where I should of told myself to RTM, lol. Looks like you did have to enable it to run at startup, it was in one of those annoying submenus, not used to using that with a pw. Thanks.
