Updating my gaming rig

I think so. The waiting game is unwinnable, so once I get the itch, I tend to pull the trigger pretty quickly, unless something is absolutely imminent. Thanks for the feedback!

Updating my gaming rig

My current SSD (Crucial 256GB) doesn't give me enough headroom to install many/any games, so I'm thinking something a little larger. That got me tumbling down the rabbit hole of a more thorough computer upgrade. I have a 1070 GTX vidcard, Seagate 650W PSU that's less than a year old, a Samsung...

Assassin's Hardware Guide

[Retired] The LCD Thread

One really quick question on this monitor: does anyone know if it has a glossy screen or an anti-glare screen? My wife has a strong preference for non-glossy. Thanks in advance!

E8400 temp problems

85C sounds pretty extreme, and the swing (from 40 up to 85) is also excessive. If I were you I might check to make sure my current HSF is seated correctly on the CPU.

Planning new computer for my wife

I agree that the PSU is overkill, but I wanted a modular power supply for the small case. Any other modular PSUs you'd suggest? EDIT: Never mind, I see that the cases you recommend have their own PSUs. I'll take a look at the HDDs and cases you suggested, for sure. As for a Quad, I didn't...

Planning new computer for my wife

My wife is probably due for a new home computer. She gets a laptop provided to her from work, but she still wants a desktop for everyday use. She is not a gamer, but she does use some relatively CPU-intensive programs (Stata, SAS, some other analytical modeling tools I can't remember)...

Failing PSU fan, need advice

I was able to apply the light oil to the fan. It's been 5 days and no noise, so it looks like the temporary fix is working. Thanks for all the advice!

Okay, I'll consider a slipstream solution. Vista is on order, so XP might just be a short term solution. And I did answer your question! I gave you OS, hard drive, and mobo info. :)

XP: Wrong Drive Size

I just finished putting together a new rig. I installed Windows XP, and it recognized my new Seagate Barracuda 500 GB drive as only a 128 GB drive. The BIOS displays it correctly, and Hitachi's Hard Drive Fitness Test also sees it as a 500 GB drive. Suggestions?

Failing PSU fan, need advice

Well, the fan cables are soldered into a circuit board, so I'm not going to mess with removing it and replacing it. Instead I've got everything opened up and ready for some light oil treatment. I'll get some while I'm out today and see how that does.
