after a good cleaning and proper as5 (super thin as hsf and cpu are both lapped near flawless..) the diff between ambient and idle, and ambient and full load are much better.. 2C above ambient at idle, and 14 above at full load, so my delta is exactly back to where is was before. Bottom line...

thx for the support and clarification Lumbus.. and yeah, you're right about that 2nd part.. I was thinking more of 'feel' (like 'cold steel' vs wood or something) than of logic.. (thermal conductivity and heat transfer creating that cold feel...) I should have just left that part out altogether =)

So you say it's not possible to have 22C air pumping into a case, and have a thermistor in a low airflow area soaking up dissipated heat to 25C, and have my cpu cooled by the 22C air to a nice 24C? Given that there are 2 80mm fans blowing air into the case towards the cpu, the large hsf fan...

yeah i'm gonna dust-off the whole thing but using the double height (for dual fan) filters on the front of my case to keep dust out, I dont have much of a dust issue. I guess I'll just have to hope for the best with a re-seat, and also cry a little since my $300 cpu is so cheap to buy now.

My lapped x2-3800 with a freezer pro 64 or whatever used to run at 24C idle, 37C load, oc'd to 2.6 on air cooling. Ambient temp was actually 25!. Granted, that was before the heat wave we've been having, but now it's running around 42C idle, 49C load. This has been a very, very slow process...

Extending a PCI-E power connector with... Another connector...

cant you just match the wires to their location on the connector, and make sure that you splice to the same ones on the new/extended connector? Unless there is heatshrink or something in the way, that'd be my suggestion. AFAIK they are all on the same 12v rail, you can always voltmeter it and...

Best AGP card for games for $130-$150

what cpu/ram? Honestly I LOVED my 6600GT w/ddr3.. it would have lived forever had I not basically snapped it in half. Crap, even my old 4800ti flies through half life 2 and cs source at 1280x1024..

Question for x1900xt owners

happens to me almost every boot.. 2 diff motherboards, 2 diff bioses on each, no bios change on the (ati mfg) gpu, 4 different displays.. somethings up with the card! Still works sweet though

How big a difference is a VGA connection vs DVI?

same here. On an higher end acer (i know, high end acer?) 19" for my girlfriend, the vga sucked and had 'shadows' on everything, dvi cable cleared it up, looks super sharp and nice. Same thing on my 32" lcd, vga was decent, dvi is just sharp and perfect. Some mfgs just arent invensting much...
