Are you sure the drive isn't failing?
I've seen this happen and the drive was actually failing, mass amounts of bad sectors.
Windows would say its not formatted, and healthy, but a program like "Get Data Back" could scan the drive and recover the data from right inside windows.

Only other time I get that sound is when my PC is running on the UPS battery power. PSU power regulation having fun with the crappy wave from the Belkin UPS.
I finally figured mine out. It was a confliction between my chipset drivers and my video drivers.
When I updated the latest nvidia video drivers for my card it started the problem, it didn't like my really outdated chipset drivers.
Updated the chipset drivers and it stopped the freezing and...
His PSU most likely has 2 6pin SLI power connectors.
He probably just switched which one he was using.
By the sound of it, his HS wasn't making good contact to the core before, and re-seating it fixed it.
I know my problem isn't a ram problem. This sys can run memtest and prime all year long.
I did just find out that the HDD that serves as my C: and D: drives is on its way out.
Spewing errors in event viewer and fails seagate tools check.
RMA drive is on the way.

Disable RAID in BIOS for the controller that the drive is on.
Your obviously not using RAID for this single drive setup, and the controller is probably trying to make an array with it. Which is why windows can't detect it as a normal drive.
If you followed the steps I explained above and the drive is not listed in that window then the drive is not working.
Its either not hooked up right or dead.
Is it new or used?
I really doubt its the DDR2 800 in vista64, like you said there has to be tons of people running that combo.

I'm having the same exact problem. Monitors go into power save mode and sound loops.
My guess is our GPU's are on the way out.
It only seems to happen on games that really stress the video card though. Like Portal and HL2 Episode 2 make it crash at random
But HL2DM, Quake 4, Doom3, and...
What kind of crash is it? Does the game just hard lock with a frozen picture on the screen or does your monitor go black and then into power save mode with the sound studdering/looping?
Did you initialize and format it yet?
If not:
Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management
You should then see the drive listed there if it is working.
You have to initialize and format a new HDD before it will show up in the normal windows...
I bought one, after like 5 hours the site finally came back up and started working right.
I was guna wait until BF but I like the Costco warranty and I at least know this one has a tuner before I get to the store lol.
