Well --- electricity will complicate matters for me too much unless I buy a killawatt - and then I'm on the laptop all day at work and the desktop is just for a little time at home anyhow... RAM is the same for the two boards though, right?

I'm looking at upgrading platforms from my 939, opty @ 2.75 - to probably something like a i920 as I would like to keep the system for another few years again. It's still decent for many thing, but it's definately not getting the full potential out of my 8800gt judging by the 3dmark scores...

I'm running an opty 170 @ 2.75, but my 8800GT is not able to open it's wings judging by the 3dmark06 scores 10k vs. 16k-20k for the quad cores - so I'm trying to research upgrading to q6600 or i7 or ?? since my ram and board will have to change too.
I just installed my 939 opty 170 from newegg - $115 - and am running nice and stable at 10x275, corsair value ram at 206 (my epox board won't allow 4 sticks to do 1T). BTW - it's an LCBQE chip.
I ran super pi 1.5 and got 26.578 for the initial value @ 32M - sound about right? Runs cooler...
Thanks all - I found lots of old / new info at xtremesystems.org started in 2005, but not sure if there's a more current procedure - like just install the amd version of the dualcore optimizer and be done with it or also install the MS version and regedit and change the boot.ini yadda yadda...
I just installed my new opteron 170 to replace my old 3000+. It seems by reading the forums that I don't need any drivers, but I came across this on the amd site - has anyone tried it?:

You're just running 2 sticks, eh? I found 4 sticks can't do 1T. I have 4x512 corsair value @ 200, 3000+ chip at 9x265. I bought the 170 at NE for $115 - thanks for the tip!
Sorry - that's my bad - it was for a 170. Still, a good deal! I have my 3000+ @ 9x265. I have had it up to 333 etc before, but not stable.. and I don't remember how I got it to boot then either... probably turned down the timings and ram a lot. Maybe the new chip will help get a higher Hz...
So - as a parting shot - to stretch the life out a bit - what's a good processor for this now? I'm still running my 3000+ @ 2.4 - anything going to smack that down hard I should look at?
I did finally get another e-mail from epox and I was specific about using the same cas and pc3200 - and they did say it should work fine (nothing about defaulting down to 333). I will try the 512 since it's only about $49 on newegg vs. $90 for the 1g. On the odd chance - anyone running bf2142...
