    Move / Rename

There is no need for this. As has already been stated, a rename (mv) is atomic. The problem you are describing is fairly common with watch directory type applications, and the simplest solution is to rename or mv the file.

    Linux scripting help...

You don't need to wget the files, you can rpm -ivh <web address of RPM> which will download and install the RPM. Also, to answer your original question, the simplest bash scripts are nothing more than a shabang (#!/bin/bash) and a list of commands that you wish to run. There are of course many...

ms exchange like solution for Linux

Zimbra is what you need, the majority of it is open source, even the Network Edition (clustering per their wiki is handled by the Red Hat Cluster Suite which I've been able to configure for the OSS version)

    Asterisk Question

Absolutely. Many companies use VoIP to link branch offices and make use of cheap rates. My company offers hosted Asterisk systems that lets your telecommuting users utilize your phone lines at your rates, they just need a VoIP phone (there are a variety of free software phones online for this...

Password keeps reverting after a reboot

Yes, check your /etc/nsswitch.conf to verify order. I usually recommend files first then whatever other mechanism you use for account information (Active directory, NIS etc)

reading harddrives with identical lvm information on them on one machine

Actually this is possible and I do this regularly for snapshot provisioning. You need to change the UUID of the PV. Here is a link to the procedure: http://archives.free.net.ph/me...51843.1d3b9863.en.html

    bill to decriminalize personal marijuana

Wait a minute, I'm all for legalization, but don't think for a second that it is safe to get high and take a drive. There is nothing at all wrong IMO with smoking recreationally, you feel less stressed, and I've never met an angry pot-head (not so with raging alcoholics) but driving under the...

Two of our Apache servers remounted root filesystem as read-only

As was previously stated, ext3 will do that to if you it runs into an issue. Does dmesg or /var/log/messages show any ext3 errors? I had a box that was giving me fits, with the same issue, finally did a memory scan and turned up a bad stick, go figure.

    symlink question

ACL's would be a good solution to your problem.

    filesystem for 5TB server

Are you set on Linux? ZFS (Zettabyte File System) from Sun would be perfect for this setup, and with RAIDZ you will almost certainly benefit from the dynamic stripe size and (optional) double-parity (as the size of your array grows, so too does the chance for double failure) it's one of the few...

where else are drives called other then fstab?

No, not the case, if the drive is necessary (root partition, part of an LVM group etc) then it will certainly fail to boot, just as it would in Windows, or Solaris, or HP-UX. FC and RHEL main have used LVM as the default partition type for quite some time. Are you absolutely positive this is not...

Can't access tape drive from Solaris 8 - permissions?

What does /var/adm/messages say? Is the drive mounted? How do you run the current script (as a user or as root?) can you paste the script here?

Need advice on a lease situation

Thanks for the replies, no they don't have to live together, but as I said the pay is pretty crappy so room mates were a good option to save on rent, and like minded individuals seemed like a safe enough bet. I know that we could get a lawyer and go to court (and that would probably be the...

I'm new to Linux and I have a couple of Stupid Questions for the not

You should use aptitude from the command line, log in as yourself and su to root in an xterm then run aptitude install <package name> Debian prevents you from logging in to an X session as root for security reasons, but that doesn't mean you can't issue commands as root once you are logged in as...
