First of all please be specific about the device you are talking about, old LG Optimus phone will not help anyway.
If officially there is no upgrade you can still root your device and upgrade up to ICS (most probably) but not more than that, not to JB.

For me a phone above 300 ppi is more than sufficient, anything that gets above that fall in the same category for me.

Nexus phones are great in performance, and those who do not want manufacturer apps Nexus phones are great for them.
New Nexus 7 is having lot of issues with their screen.. people are reporting problem that screen is behaving abnormal, auto-touch issues...
