Auto is the safest way to go but Asrock got one twirk - the ram speed on Auto defaults to 333 even u got DDR400 installed. set it manually to 400 and all is well.
The Aperture is for AGP only - PCIe does not use it.
Disregard all AGP bios setting if u don't have a AGP card.
reason for my question is that the default 'voltage' control mode makes a horrible (bone drilling) high pitched noise. switching to PWM..
..seems to work well but what exactly is this mode?

If you mean the flat 4-pin molex next to the pcie slot - it's needed to power the *second* Sli card. If you mean the squary 4-pin near the cpu socket it's the dual 12V feed and must be plugged in.
