?? I writing this e-mail on my 'old' computer (built in January 2004) that boots into Windows XP from my RAID 5 array running off a Promise Technology PCI based RAID controller.....so it has been possible on non-mobo RAID controllers for at least 3 years......
how about the reverse? My new IP35 Pro has yet to come out of its box, but I am planning on a four disk RAID 5 array containing Windows XP, with a non-RAID drive on the same controller. Is this possible?
[Although kingfetty presents an interesting idea for me....my goal is data integrity...
I'm also planning on buying a P35 mobo....I'm looking at the Abit IP35 Pro. My usage is more like a workstation...no gaming, 4 250MB HDD on a RAID 5 configuration. Most intensive usage is photo and video manipulation....but not real intense.
I also need a video card...
The speed and throughput on the PCI bus is a lot worse than the speed and the throughput directly off the southbridge controller. I would have to refresh my knowledge of buses and speeds, but that's the basic theory (I think).
In my current setup, at first, I only had the RAID 5 array setup...
I'm looking for a recommendation for a MOBO. My desired specs:
- capability to run a 4 disk SATA RAID 5 array AND
- a one disk SATA non-RAID HDD (for temporary files (like raw video capture))
- 12 USB ports (I have had problems with USB hubs, so I want to avoid them)
- at least one...
