Laptop recommendation for Grad school

I'd look for something with: -DDR3. Lower power, and potentially higher performance, but not a huge performance increase for laptops compared to DDR2. The power savings and cooler operating temps of DDR3 are nice though. -250GB or bigger hdd, not really sure how big you'd like... up to you...

Holy cow dude. That is awesome. Be sure to run Prime95 and some other stress tests, and monitor temps on that CPU! I really hope that it's entirely stable with 4 cores unlocked. That is wicked cool though! You should run Folding@Home on that bad boy rig :D

is there a definitive answer on how to maximize a battery's lifetime?

Reduce backlight brightness, use only 1 stick of RAM instead of 2 that are half as big. Go into Windows Power Settings and set everything to super conservative. Clean up your Windows install of unnecessary startup tasks and services. Clean your registry out. Undervolt your processor.
