Extreme way of trying to get rid of coil whine on a reference MSI GTX 670!

My 670 exhibits a faint humming noise under load, not audible with my case closed. Both the 7850 and 7950 I tried had the same issue. Fan noise was so bad on the 670 the humming wasn't audible until I installed my Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo II.

How long do video cards last?

To the original question: they last 1 day beyond whenever your warranty expires. :) That is one good thing regarding aftermarket cooling solutions like the AC TT II. You can buy a replacement fan shroud + fans from their website for $7.

Yes, very minor "humming" noise only audible with the case door off (Antec Solo II) and my ear near the card (first noticed it last night because the AC TT II is so quiet!). Maybe its just my setup, but I'm convinced you are almost guaranteed some small amount of coil whine from this generation...

How loud are the fans on stock 670 cards?

Yep, fan noise is like a hum/grind, and it is noticeable. I gotta set aside some time to put on my AC cooler... +1 on the performance increase though. Mine boosts to 1097 at stock iirc (at work atm).

How loud are the fans on stock 670 cards?

My evga 670 with the blower fan has a fairly loud hum/grind quality to it. Knew this going in given the reviews. Already have Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo II in hand (you can get this for ~$40 in the US) but haven't had the time to install it yet.

any card can have problems, the point of buying from evga is that their customer service is there when you need it my regular evga 670 has been rock solid (not defective lol?) and its running in an otherwise low airflow (read: hot) system evga's warranty entitles you to the same product cross...

I had no such whine when using OC Scanner, and I didn't limit the frames. Mine's a regular EVGA 670.
