I need reccomendations on fans

Two 30 dBA would be around 33 dBA, if you under run it at 7 volt, you can do about 23 dBA, both fans combined. I'd say the common consensus on "silent" is anything below 25~30 dBA at 1m. Just my $0.02.

Underpowered Fans?

There's the 7 volt mod, the 5 volt mod, and also the 6 volt mod, run two fans connected in serial. Make sure your fans run without hiccup at the lower voltages, sometimes they don't work reliably and you wouldn't want something in your comp to get burned, ouch!

Advice on Fans

Panaflo. The Vantec Stealth fans have bigger ball bearings than most fans and generate a lot of vibrational noise. Panaflos use Hydro sleeve bearings, slightly lower cfm and slightly lower dBA levels as well.

possible "water" cooling solution?

i mean, it evaporates easily, but inside a closed system, won't be a problem, right? kills the bacteria and what not...

CFM needed to cool Athlon 2400+

I would put the lower cfm limit at 15~20 for an XP2400. Any lower and you'd be approaching 60+c under full load.

A Good power supply for @ $50???

Why do name brand PSUs make such a difference?

Quality of all the parts have to do with it :P A good indication of a quality power supply? Just see how heavy it is. Higher quality power supplies tend to weigh more and include a much more massive heatsink inside the unit. The SilenX, yeah it's on the expensive end. But the Fortron 120mm 300w...

Why do name brand PSUs make such a difference?

Often a matter of stability and the quality of the components inside. A look at the TomsHardware power supply shootout a while back shows the importance of quality. For me, I just wanted something quiet, I went with a Silenx. And FYI, channel well technologies manufactures Antec's power supplies. :)

How hot does a 3.06ghz chip get?

Really a matter of whether or not the stock cooler's noise level is acceptable for you, if it is, stick with it, it's a great reliable cooler designed to run that CPU just fine. If it's too loud, consider an aftermarket cooler :)

Is your Dell Dimension 4550 fan making a lot of noise?

Either that or you're just so used to how quiet it is on the first day that the second day sounds too loud for you :) I've had feelings like this before, had to whip out the trusty old sound meter to prove my gut feeling wrong!
