In the late 90s very early 00s upgrades for computers were compelling every 18 months and there was use for the power. Since PIII hit the GHz limit the compelling nature has gone way down as a result I don't upgrade my computer often I just moved on from a Core Duo laptop this year. I buy lower...
I got a smart phone a few years ago now, mostly because I wanted to develop bluetooth remote controls for embedded systems with it.
I also wanted to not have to have a phone and a iPod in my pocket. I hate not having actual buttons on my phone though to cue music and am shocked that no one has...
Just want to put in my 2 cents for the folks asking if mechanical is worth having. Though I am not sure this deal is the best deal around.
If you want a inexpensive Mechanical Keyboard the M10 isn't horrible (50-60 dollars). Not particularly well made compared to some other Mechanical keyboard...
If you don't have an SSD I think this drive is perfectly good. Most of the improvement IMHO comes from random reads 1-2 MB vs 40+ for this controller... Even if sandforce gets 80 or 160 we are talking 2 to 4 x better at most. Meanwhile you already got a 40x improvement. I think reliability is #1...
It is an interesting split opinion in the end. I maintain the computer when I do go home. There is no bloatware. It had 512 MB last visit and it was just FF/Flash sucking all the life out of it with memory leaks and just memory use having my nieces play flash kid games on it.
I put in 1 GB in...
Yeah. I mean I am considering spending the money on getting them a Sandy Bridge with 8 GB of memory. The trouble is that requires a new case or PSU and a new SATA CD, so the price comes to about 210 without an OS. The open question is would they be able/comfortable with Linux. These days I think...
Thanks for your opinion dguy. I agree, neither is snappy :-) Though running Xubuntu on the Atom was fine when I used that (I felt). I hope someone knows where to get some quantitative numbers, since the CPUs are so far apart date wise I haven't as I said found anything.
Yeah I kind of agree with you certainly per core it is a faster computer. I think of an Atom as a P5 more or less. So two P5 at 1.6 GHz verse a P6-ish thing at 1.6 Ghz.
One way the Atom might win is if the one core is able to take up the full OS and then the other just runs of one application...
This is a bit of an odd question. My parents are still using an ancient Sempron 64 2800+ (1.6 GHz) based computer. At almost a decade old it is of course rather slow as the web gets more demanding.
Meanwhile I have an atom D510 just laying around. But the question is would that actually be...
I have been using AsmallOrange for a while as a personal website host no major complaints. However the few times I have had popular things posted, I have quickly hit my bandwidth cap. I would like to find a host that is more flexible in regards to bandwidth, I don't feel I need to pay for a huge...
The is the fallacy of a 'few bucks'. The savings is over 20% IE 1/5 of another monitor. A little here a little there it adds up. 7/11 20 Oz soda costs 5 cents an Oz; supermarket 1.3 cents. Not a big deal? That is over 300%! Only percentages are fair. Over a year if you drink 1 soda a day, you'd...
