Why do cars still use a rod to hold up the hood (and the big arms for the trunk)?

As has been said, the 'rod' will last forever, to all practical intents and purposes. The gas struts manifestly won't. I'd cynically argue they are another gimmick that will apparently make your life easier, but doesn't actually do that in any meaningful or constructive fashion, while giving...
