I have been considering buying a 22" or so LCD to get a little more desktop real estate.

Put the XP on your parent's computer, call microsoft, tell them it's the same computer and that you had to re-install windows.
They will activate the XP and all will be fine.
(You'll be breaking the contract of your EULA, but Windows will activate your XP)
It probably had more to do with the rapididy of the changes to your system. Maybe Vista has some kind of "changes during a certain time period" algorithm which causes it to default and deactivate.
Just a thought though.
On an aside, XP OEM requires you to do this kind of thing alot...
