Recommendations for cheapo (sub $20) speakers?

Try the $20 amplified speakers from Sony, if you want externally powered speakers (they work without power, too). Or they have a pair for $10 that is not powered- just plug n' go- check at a local Wal Mart, etc for those, at same prices.

What would be some uses for a variable frequency AC power supply?

Actually, most of the shipboard power is not 400Hz, but there are a few things that use it- such as radar. There is only a small portion of the power distribution system on a carrier that is 400Hz. There are high voltage sections, 4160v, but that is 60Hz.

Installing XP on Dell Inspiron 3000

Though not personal experience, I had a friend do such an install while we were out to sea. He did not seem to have any issues, just following a most-to-least important pattern on drivers. In all of the installs I've done on my laptoop, I've never had any issues with order of installs, etc...

Windows 2k Pro or XP Pro

I run XP Pro on my pc (happens to be a laptop) with 512 ram, and do not notice a problem with memomry consumption (I usually run with my paging file turned off) except when I run 3dsMax. Then it takes a reboot to clearthe memory and get back to running like normal. But other than that, UT2003...
