New build

The one problem with choosing a GPU is, I've never bought one before and it's not really clear how powerful they are. I'm not really going to game all that much. Probably VERY occasionally. Would the cheapest GPU available be enough?

WD Velociraptor

I'm thinking about getting the WD Velociraptor, but it's VERY expensive. So before I waste my money, I'd like to know if it's really worth it. Like system booting speed, file reading speed. Would it be significantly different from my 7200RPM HDD?

overclocking and CPU life?

I guess CPU lives are long enough to last till it becomes obsolete. I don't think I'll be using the same processor if a Hex Core 5.0GHz is out at a few hundred bucks... if that happens within the next few years

overclocking and CPU life?

My friend told my that overclocking a CPU will decrease its life by about 3 months (of course I think it'll really depend on how much you overclock it) What's the initial life? If it's reasonably long like 3 years, I could think of doing it. If there are any other pro's or con's anyone...

More power usage in Ubuntu than Windows XP.

well... you could try other distros like Gentoo, which is compiled on your computer to fit your hardware perfectly or just something simple like Mandriva or Fedora

I guess it has to do with Ubuntu's power management. Ubuntu failed miserably on one of my computers to hibernate, suspend, and do anything properly concerning power. It eventually caused the fuse to go out in my basement....
