DRI does work on FreeBSD: DRI on FreeBSD Linux compatability isn't a true emulation of a Linux environment in the classical sense, its a linux kernel and collection of libraries, etc that can be used to run linux apps. In fact, on many occasions, FreeBSD runs linux apps faster than Linux does...

I'm gunna go with Nothinman on that... I had a Sparcstation 20, albeit a very slow machine, but it ran Debian very well, much better than it could run Solaris 8. Also, I do agree that the UI on Sparcs running Solaris is very slow, but on the server end, they are quite amazing. I consider...

Is 43 dBA loud?

It depends upon where they take the measurement from, and I dont think there is a standard on this... my fan is rated at 43dba, but its a 60mm fan, and its f***ing loud. But I installed a homemade baybus, so I can switch between 7 and 12 volts, which makes it slightly more bearable for sleeping...

I favor FreeBSD as my OS of choice. The reasons for this are many, but basically what it comes down to is that it works and works well. The ports collection is great, and I love being able to use cvsup to make upgrading simple. Administration is mostly very intuitive... IMO, much more so than...

What is the differances between the BSDs

I give my vote to FreeBSD- Increadibly stable (a bsd trait in general) Huge number of ports available...and they work Great community support Very active (desktop) development - Good server side stuff too, but FreeBSD is my workstation, so this is the most important. Excellent hardware...

OSX on the x86 what do you think?

Greetings- I remember doing an overclock on a 300A back in the day and I seem to remember being able to cut a trace to get more voltage... Good Luck!

I'm running FreeBSD 4.5-stable and KDE3 on an Athlon 1.4@1.6 with 512MB 2100DDR and (while I'm usually a minimalist in my windowmanager selection), it's very pretty and works quite well. No lag whatsoever and great stability thus far... You can get packages for FreeBSD at http://freebsd.kde.org...

New Case

Greetings All- I just bought an Antec SX1040B and I like it a lot. With plenty of cooling options, 400W p/s and sturdy construction, this is truly an awesome case. Be warned, it is quite heavy. It actually deadens the sound of my Thermaltake SK-6 Extreme (40 cfm) setup to a bearable...

Actually, you can print to lpr or tcp printers from windows, and it is very easy to set up an lpr print server...im sure there is a how-to out there, jsut do a search for "linux lpr print server" or something similar. Samba has made some serious leaps in its effectiveness, however it is still...

Is there an alternative OS?

I'm gunna suggest FreeBSD... It is a unix-like OS, has great support, is extremely robust and there is only one FreeBSD, unlike the countless number of linux distrobutions. (granted there is an OpenBSD and NetBSD) Additionally, it can take advantage of the huge amount of linux software out...

i believe the mandrake utility is sndconfig...run this as root, it should be very simple. don't forget to do some post install security tweaking if u have a perminent internet connection.... -fish

Duron question............STRANGE things going on

Well, here are a couple thought and anyone is more than welcome to criticize these ideas. My first thought was that perhaps your friends case has better cooling all around...at the very least that 250W P/s may have a better fan in it than your 235. Also, if his case allows more space around...

from what I understand, the PIV is not all that impressive, not only does it get beat by slower TBirds, but it would actually be slower than a PIII clocked at the same speed. Go figure...
