USB over Cat5e or Cat6

Is it possible to extend the range of USB by having it go over Cat5e/Cat6? I know that USB is not just limited by signal loss, but also the timing of the longer run(It takes longer for the signal to get there, so the other side stops waiting for it too soon). But Cat5 should be able to help...

i can only access shares by IP across router

neither is the case. this is just a simple network(no domain). It's just 2 computers, and i created an administrator account with the same name and password. Also, the IP's are all correct. I've verified that. When I ping by name, it resolves to the correct IP.

I have a question about this case. I noticed that the blanks that go on the front over the 5.25 inch bays, are the color of the case(ie, orange, or blue, or silver). So if I stick an ordinary beige drive in there, won't it look crappy? Or do the covers hide the drive somehow?

I'm thinking of hooking 2 comps together with a X-over cable with 2 cheapo gigabit cards. They're only like 20 bucks at Newegg. Do you guys think that they will have decent performance with a X-over?
